WHITESTONE custom LOG HOME

log home made from hand peeled, hand scribed western cedar logs from British columbia

This project was incredibly difficult but very rewarding. We needed to first create proper construction access and relocate an existing cabin. Once the initial site work was completed, we needed to blast bedrock to allow for the eventual walkout basement. It took 86 dump truck loads to remove all of the blast rock and prepare for foundation work.

When blasting, it is very difficult to accurately pin point the depth of the blast and because of this, our footings varied in depth from 24" to 60". Once the footings were backfilled, we formed and poured the foundation walls, creating the footprint of this vacation home. We then framed the main floor and prepared for the arrival of the logs. The western red cedar logs were hand peeled, hand scribed and custom fitted in a building yard in British Columbia.

The logs were then numbered, disassembled and shipped to our job site. The log shell was assembled in 1 week and we then completed all the exterior wall infill and roof framing. The exposed foundation is veneered with local granite. The main roofing material is cedar shakes and the skirt roof and barrel roof are both covered in sheet copper. All flashings are copper. The windows and doors are solid wood units with true divided lites. The main entry door is constructed with reclaimed antique hemlock. The main flooring is reclaimed antique hemlock. Local slabs of granite flagstone are used in the entry foyer, powder room, coat room and pantry.
